Oxford League XC Series.

A BUOYANT Cirencester Athletics Club played host to the Oxford League XC Series in Cirencester Park and the CAC organisers and marshals did a superb job putting on an excellent event.

The toughest course of the year attracted 592 runners including a record 54 from Ciren.

In the ladies' event, a determined Wendy Nicholls battled to an outstanding win in the mud and treacherous climbs, while Jenny Manners also had a strong run to finish a close third.

Fi Collings (20th), in her first XC for some time, gave the Ciren ladies a win in Division One.

Not to be outdone, Jo Musk, returning from injury, XC star Nicola Denning and triathlete Sarah Gunn won Division 3 and a further team of three Ciren ladies ran into 17th spot in Division Three.

In the series as a whole, the Ciren ladies' A and C teams are now both fourth.

The men’s team of seven also enjoyed a good day with a joint win in Division One.

Denis Galerin raced to seventh, just six seconds ahead of Adrian Williams and the pair were followed by a flu-stricken Dave Bell (11th). Rob Abraham (17th), with no blister problems this time, finished just ahead of in-form Simon Campbell (19th) and there were also solid runs from Bill Leggate (26th) and Rob Forbes (29th). This men's team now lies second in the series.

The men’s B team (Mark Sysum, Robbie Brown, Richard Hurdle, Jon Hiscock, Keith Firkin, Howard Evans and Colin Tapley) matched the ladies to win Division Three and moved up to seventh in the series. Another seven-man Ciren team raced to eighth place in Division Three.

It's impossible to mention all the juniors but in the U9s, Kirsten Powell (26th) and Tom Williams (40th) led home the seven Ciren runners.

Luke Buck (sixth), Thomas Rowland (ninth) and Harvey Rowland (11th) packed well in the U11s field of 43 to finish second team.

Millie Dawson was seventh U13 girl and Ellen Foster came home 15th out of 48.

Kirsty Roberts, who raced the previous day, was 16th among the U17 girls and Matt Crew finished seventh U17 boy. Another 11 juniors ran.
