GOALS from Wood and Packer gave Avonvale United a much-needed victory in their battle to avoid the drop.

Finding himself in space in the area, Dryden unselfishly laid the ball to Wood, who stroked the ball into the net to give Avonvale a half-time lead.

This was followed up early in the second half by a powerful effort by Packer which just eluded the keeper.

Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the game for manager Boulton was seeing his side keep only their second clean sheet of the season, thanks largely to a terrific last-ditch tackle by Lambert.

Avonvale Utd III 2

Sharpness III 0

IN A game heavily influenced by the weather, both sides struggled to create any real chances. With weather conditions almost unplayable both teams had to change tactics to a long-ball game which resulted in a lack of chances in the first half.

This continued in the second period until substitute Curtis O’Connell found space in the box and calmly placed the ball past the keeper. With Sharpness throwing players forward, Vale got a second goal after a great solo effort by Luke Daniels, who beat a number of players before slotting home.

Vale keeper Chris Baker maintained his concentration throughout the game and made two brilliant saves, as Vale hung on for three priceless points.
