THE COTSWOLD Veldrijden cyclo cross team have a new world champion – Dave McMullen.

Two club riders, McMullen and Andy Roberts, made the long journey to Gossau in Switzerland for the World Masters Cyclocross Championships last weekend.

Switzerland is enduring the same rainy weather as the UK and the extremely muddy, undulating course proved particularly demanding and strength-sapping.

But McMullen rose to the challenge, pushing on after a good start to break away from the main pack and take victory by more than a minute.

In the process he clinched the rainbow jersey as World Cyclocross Masters Champion in the 60+ category.

Roberts also raced in the 60+ group and fought hard for a very respectable fifth place finish.

This weekend the Cotswold Veldrijden team are hoping for more success at the National Cyclocross Championships.
