BOXING: Ferris stars with the performance of the night

MALMESBURY light welterweight Charlie Ferris put on the display of the night at the host club’s dinner boxing show in front of a packed Neeld Hall in Chippenham on Saturday.

The NABC Western Counties champion faced Sher Fiaz from Birmingham’s Small Heath ABC and took charge of matters from the first bell.

Ferris’ punch variety and slick moves were in evidence throughout the contest and he underlined his superiority by forcing his opponent to take a standing count in the second round. Ferris’ unanimous points win was a formality and earned him the Percy Bright Cup for the best home boxer performance which was presented by special guest Freddie Burns – the Gloucester and England rugby star.

The show opened with an entertaining skills bout between two 10-year-olds – Malmesbury’s Aiden Hirst and Small Heath’s Ethan Lakin.

There is no decision in a skills bout and both boys' hands were raised by the referee at the end of the three rounds. Neither boy is able to box competitively until next year when they reach 11 years of age.

Luke Woolls avenged a previous loss against Priorswood’s Joe Davies with a much improved work-rate which saw him double his jab effectively to move into range where he scored with punches to head and body, emerging the points victor.

Conor Webley made his debut against Arbaaz Chauhan from Coventry Boys ABC who was also having his first contest. Both boys boxed well and there was little between them at the end of the entertaining bout.

There were six other evenly matched supporting contests which provided plenty of action and entertainment for the patrons and the boxing was followed by a sporting memorabilia auction and race films to raise money to boost club funds.
