Red Insure Cup 1st Round
Cinderford Town 0
Cirencester Town 1
A MIX of first-teamers and development players helped Cirencester – captained by Ellis Dunton – into the second round of the League Cup thanks to a late goal by Shane Bumphrey.
Cinderford were also resting a number of their first team and included several members of their U18s squad.
Cinderford were soon on the offensive, being awarded a couple of corners on their right flank within the first few minutes.
During the early part of the game, Cirencester produced some good flowing football with multi- pass moves featuring Aidan Bennett and Jack Smith.
Cinderford were relying on breaks and towards the end of the half produced a number of shots from distance that Adam Clatworthy dealt with comfortably.
The Foresters did get the ball in the back of the Cirencester net just after the interval but the effort was ruled offside.
The match looked to be heading for a penalty shoot-out as the two sides cancelled one another out in the second period, but three minutes before the end of normal time Cirencester made the breakthrough.
Matt Fusco intercepted a ball inside his own half and moved it on to the impressive Smith, who played a brilliantly weighted ball, with the outside of his right foot, into the path of Bumphrey.
The front man then rounded the covering defender and slipped the ball under the advancing Alex Harris into the net.
The performers to catch the eye for Cirencester were Kyle Pitts, who was secure and composed in the centre of defence, and Jack Smith, who linked play well with his touch and awareness.
Cirencester Town: Adam Clatworthy, James Mortimer-Jones, Jon Beeden, Dean Bromley, Kyle Pitts, Ellis Dunton (capt), Ollie Pitt (Aaron Perry, 66), Dan Roberts (Matt Fusco, 66), Jack Smith, Shane Bumphrey, Aidan Bennett.
