BOXING: Charlie Ferris clinches Western Counties Championship

MALMESBURY light welterweight Charlie Ferris had two days to remember when he competed on consecutive days in the Ambition Championships.
On Sunday, Ferris faced Downend’s Ben Demmery at Bristol’s Broad Plain Club and cruised to a unanimous points victory in a contest where the Malmesbury boy’s fitness and punch variety was the key.
The following night saw Ferris return to Bristol for the final at the Bristol Sporting Club where he faced a huge task against Paignton’s highly touted and experienced Tyler Barwood – a Junior ABA finalist last season.
Charlie’s prospects were not enhanced when the Malmesbury team saw the size of the ring – much smaller than required for championship bouts and a distinct advantage to the aggressive Barwood.
In the event, the anxieties were unfounded as Ferris, completely unfazed by the task in front of him, boxed an absolute dream and showed in the opening round that he was right on terms with the Devon boy who had won more fights than the Malmesbury boy's total number of bouts.
Ferris’ jab kept Barwood at bay and most of his opponent’s punches were avoided by smart footwork and elusive head movement as Ferris ended the round on top.
Barwood tried to up the pace in the second but Ferris stayed right with him and continued to land the cleaner and classier shots to cement his superiority.
Despite getting caught with a right hand-left hook combination at the start of the final round, Ferris quickly re-established himself and impressed with his straight punches and eye-catching uppercuts and hooks to emerge as Western Counties Champion.
He now progresses to the regional round in Portsmouth on October 27 when he will box the Southern Counties champion.
