FA Carlsberg Trophy – Preliminary Round.
Didcot Town 1.
Cirencester Town 1.
A 76TH minute goal from Steve Davies forced a replay at Didcot Town on Saturday as Cirencester Town bid to go on a run in another FA competition.
Didcot dominated in the opening 30 minutes but Chris Holland was imperious in the visitors’ reorganised defence.
Captain Shayne Anson joined Holland at the centre of the back four, replacing the injured Leigh Henry, with Joe Shepherd dropping back from midfield to take Anson’s right back slot.
With two other full backs (Ellis Dunton and Jon Beeden) also sidleined, Ben Prictor has been brought in from Brimscombe & Thrupp. And former Centurion, Sean Wood, featured in his first game for the club after rejoining in the week from Hungerford, taking Shepherd’s place in midfield. Cirencester’s new-look rearguard had the worst possible start, conceding a goal in the second minute, when Lance Williams powerfully headed home a Taylor Janes corner at the near post.
The Railwaymen looked extremely lively up front although Ciren gradually gained a foothold in the game towards the break without ever looking like getting past Didcot’s dominant defender Luke Cornall.
Ciren then suffered more injury woe when, in the 43rd minute, Shepherd collapsed in pain with what is thought to be a recurrence of a previous hip injury.
Ciren were a different proposition in the second half, though, mounting numerous attacks down the flanks with Lee Smith and Aidan Bennett prominent.
And it was no surprise when Ciren levelled in the 76th minute.
The industrious Brad Hopper sent Bennett clear down the right, and his firm cross was bundled home by Steve Davies at the back post.
Veteran keeper Glyn Garner ensured that Ciren would bring Didcot back for the replay when saving substitute Matt Blenford’s last-seconds strike with his legs.
Cirencester Town: Garner, Anson (capt), Prictor, Mortimer-Jones, Holland, Wood, Shepherd (Bennett, 44), Hooper, Collier (Bevan, 70), Davies, Smith. Unused sub: Bromley. Cirencester Town’s FA Trophy replay with Didcot Town on Tuesday (October 8) at the Corinium Stadium replaces the away league match at Godalming Town scheduled for the same night.
