COTSWOLD motor racing starlet Alice Powell has been joined at the top of the F3 Championship Cup standings after a mixed weekend at Donington Park.
The series, which Alice has led for months, could not be more delicately poised with just one weekend remaining after Alex Craven pulled level in the points table.
Alice made a brilliant start in race one chasing the leader Craven and having to withstand huge pressure from a charging Tristan Cliffe right on her tail in third.
Finally, Cliffe got past, only to spin into the gravel two laps later which promoted Alice back into second place.
The former Cotswold School student’s defensive skills were tested for the remainder of the race as well, as Louis Hamilton-Smith pressed to find a way past, but Alice held on.
to finish runner-up.
The drama started for Alice ahead of race two when her car cut out before the warming-up lap and she had to be push-started by the marshals, resulting in a ten second penalty. Alice struggled to keep pace with the leading trio, but the race was cut short, as the red flag ended the race with five minutes to spare.
Alice was in fourth at the time but the penalty dropped her down another place.
Alice said: “It was always going to be a tough weekend. My Toyota engine is no way near as strong as my rivals, as it is 30kg heavier, so it makes it tricky on the type of corners that Donington produces and up the steep hill. "However, we have to stay positive and we have a month to work hard to get things sorted for the final round. It is going to be close, but I am so determined to win."
The final races take place at Snetterton on October 26-27.
