CIRENCESTER Golf Club head pro Ed Goodwin has narrowly missed out on winning the Gloucestershire and Somerset PGA Matchplay Championship for the third year in a row.
Goodwin won his way through to the final of the opening G&S tournament of the season at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club where he lost 4&2 to Giuseppe Licata from the Bristol Golf Centre.
The pair traded birdies throughout the front nine of the Wormald and Partners-sponsored championship, with Licata always holding the upper hand and he rounded the match off on the 16th hole with his fourth birdie.
Defending champion and top seed Goodwin had got proceedings under way on day one against Pat Baker, recording a 2&1 success.
Goodwin then posted his tenth consecutive victory in the event when beating Nick Ellis by 5&4.
Rod Hibbitt, of Cotswold Edge GC, also won a semi final place with his 3&2 win over Paul Deeprose.
On the second day, near-neighbours Goodwin and Hibbitt battled out the first semi with the Cirencester pro quickly in command after winning the opening two holes.
He maintained the advantage during the morning and rounded out win No.11 on the 17th by 2&1.
Then Licata won the clash of the top two seeds in the afternoon final.
