Scintillating Purton slam league leaders

Shortwood United 0.
AFTER losing 5-0 away to Shortwood in their second match of the season, Purton completely outplayed the league leaders in the return fixture on Saturday, writes Alan Eastwood.
The management team of Chris Pethick and Steve Hall were away on the day, so Jamie Cowley and Nick McCrae were at the helm – and the whole team responded brilliantly.
Shortwood almost took a fifth-minute lead but that chance and two other efforts during the whole game were all the visitors could muster against an inspired Purton side.
A 20-yard shot by Fitzgerald put Purton ahead in the tenth minute and it was the same player who released Gooch to make it 2-0 on the half-hour mark.
The second half saw Purton continue to outplay Shortwood, Hall and Fitzgerald (twice) both being unlucky not to find the net.
On 56 minutes, though, it was 3-0 as Fitzgerald converted a deep cross from full back Brown, side-stepping his marker and crashing the ball in.
It was 4-0 after 67 minutes when a great run and cross by Gee saw Campbell connect with a perfect volley into the roof of the net.
There might have been further goals as Fitzgerald, Hall and Campbell all subsequently tested the Shortwood keeper.
