NEWCASTLE’S young Premier League rider Lewis Kerr has been given the exciting – and daunting – task of riding for Swindon Robins in the Elite League play-offs which begin on Monday night.
Robins boss Alun Rossiter has had to find a replacement for reserve Ashley Birks who broke his back in two places in a race crash at Plymouth on Friday.
Birks was due to undergo surgery over the weekend to have two rods placed in his back.
Reigning champions Swindon entertain a star-studded Poole line-up, which boasts both Darcy Ward and Greg Hancock, in Monday’s first leg semi-final showdown at the Abbey Stadium.
Rossiter said: "It’s devastating for Ashley and we hope he is up and about as soon as possible.
“I’ve looked at all the available options and I’m sure Lewis will do a good job for us.
“He’s been getting a few double-figures scores in his Premier League matches with Newcastle recently and also had his first Elite League race win at King’s Lynn earlier this week.
“He’s improving all the time and we’re looking forward to him joining up with us on Monday.”
