Sweetfuels CDCA Div 3.
Central Hall 78 all out.
Fairford II 152-9.
FAIRFORD seconds were made to sweat by Central Hall on the last day of the CDCA league season before eventually clinching the Division 3 title with a 74-run victory.
Central Hall did well to put the game on at all after heavy rain towards the end of the week. However, runs always looked likely to be at a premium on the inevitably slow, green wicket and heavy outfield.
Asked to bat first, Fairford got off to a decent start but struggled to maintain momentum as wickets fell regularly to a combination of poor shot selection and the conditions.
Simon Embleton-Smith did, however, top-score with a painstaking 35.
The other main contributions came from Gareth Bowman (26), Matt Williams (20) and Paul Morris, who marshalled the team past 150 to ensure three of the six points required to win the league when scoring an invaluable 19* out of the total of 152-9.
Neil Laing was the pick of the home side's bowlers, impressing on his way to 4-30 in his ten overs.
Sam Young set the tone when Fairford took to the field with wickets in each of his first two overs. All the bowlers maintained the pressure, supported by an excellent fielding effort, led by Williams swooping gracefully in the covers and taking two catches.
Morris and Rich Bennett chipped in with a wicket each and Guy Bailey produced an outstanding spell of 6-1-9-4, including the fifth and sixth wickets in consecutive balls to ensure the league title.
He then gave way to son Charlie, who took the last wicket of the match to complete a family ‘5 for’, as Central Hall were dismissed for 78 (of which opener James Hill scored 30).
Fairford's title was a real team effort over the season and they are looking forward to competing in Division 2 next year.
