Fairford Town 2.
IT WAS all smiles at the Red House on Saturday when Purton, after two league defeats on the trot, bounced back from a 2-0 half-time deficit to run out 5-2 winners against a much-fancied Fairford Town, writes Alan Eastwood.
Purton manager Chris Pethick was pleased to welcome back keeper Gary Stevens and outfielders Blaine Fitzgerald, Johnny Coole and Ryan Child, and there was a rare appearance for Steven May.
Fairford dominated the first half with goals from Jack Allen (15min) and Nathan Gambling (37m), who headed in a Dan Drewett corner.
Purton skipper Marcus Hall had hit the bar after just five minutes with a brilliant 25-yard effort but that, along with a saved Blaine Fitzgerald header just before the break, were the hosts’ only two openings of the half.
Purton pulled a goal back following a corner in the 58th minute when a Joe Dorey effort went in off the Fairford keeper.
Marcus Hall then squared the match, converting a penalty kick on 62 minutes, and Dorey netted again on 72 minutes to take the lead.
Purton had turned the game on its head and when Ashley Gooch trundled the ball in at the far post on 82 minutes and full back Child latched on to a fine pass to make it 5-2 the comeback was complete.
