FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round.
Slough Town 1 Cirencester Town 1.
CIRENCESTER came from behind to force an FA Cup replay with Slough Town and were denied a win five minutes from the end when a Lee Smith strike came back off the bar.
The team were without Will Morford and Matt Liddiard as Gloucester City, their parent club, did not wish them to be cup-tied. In addition, Steve Davies and Chris Holland had not recovered from their recent injuries and were unable to take part, but Leigh Henry was able to return to the centre of the defence after his back problem.
The game was a typical cup tie with the ball moving quickly from end to end, although the ball spent far too much time in the air.
There was an early warning from Slough when the speedy Darren Wheeler struck the outside of Glyn Garner’s post from 20 yards.
Midway through the half Wheeler again went close, cutting in from the right and unleashing a powerful shot which Garner tipped over the bar.
Cirencester were put under a period of sustained pressure just after the half-hour mark as Slough fired in a number of attempts at goal, but the defence remained resolute to clear the danger.
Slough did, however, make the breakthrough ten minutes into the second half, inevitably through Wheeler, who lobbed Garner from just outside the right edge of the penalty area.
But Cirencester were level within four minutes following a move down their left flank.
Ellis Dunton launched a long ball over the full back where Aidan Bennett made a run to collect. Bennett retained possession despite the attention of two defenders and laid the ball into the path of Sam Collier, who struck a firm left-footed shot across the keeper and inside the far post.
The final quarter-hour was attack and counter attack with neither side able to break down the other, although Cirencester did get into the box a number of times with no success.
With five minutes to go, Smith drove a fierce free kick from just outside the area against the Slough crossbar.
Cirencester Town: Garner, Anson (capt), Dunton, Mortimer-Jones, Beeden, Henry, Shepherd, Hooper (Bond, 62), Collier (Bevan, 73), Bennett (Jack Smith, 73), Lee Smith. Unused subs: Bromley, Jones.
The replay is at the Corinium Stadium on Tuesday night (September 3) at 7.45pm, meaning the scheduled league game with Cinderford Town that night has been postponed.
