Charlton 205 all out
FAIRFORD 2ND XI beat Charlton by nine wickets in a rain-affected match.
Fairford edged closer to the CDCA Division Three title in a gripping two-pronged battle against Charlton and Saturday's heavy rain showers.
Charlton were put into bat and began poorly as they slumped to 24-5 by the seventh over, with opening bowlers Richard Bennett (3-38) and Louis Cusack (3-55) causing mayhem in the early exchanges between bat and ball.
But as drizzle descended Tom Pearson began his assault on the bowling and eventually found the support he had craved in the shape of Richard Moore-Collier (23) who shored-up one end while Pearson went about the task of striking a cultured 77 which included three sixes.
To add to Fairford's woes last pair Alistair Forbes (32) and Iain McMorrine (19) put on a robust stand of 57 to lift Charlton to a challenging score of 205 off 39.2 overs.
James Skinner bowled doggedly in deteriorating conditions and took the two precious wickets of Pearson and Moore-Collier which his perseverance justified. Colin Denness chipped in with the final two wickets to finish the spirited fight-back by Charlton's tail-enders.
The most impressive performer in the field for Fairford was undoubtedly 14-year-old wicketkeeper Dan Godwin who took two vital catches and a stumping on his league debut, and played admirably despite the worsening conditions for fielders.
The rain fell harder during tea and resumption of play was delayed to a point where Fairford had a revised target of 104 to score off twenty overs. Opener Gareth Bowman was in an uncompromising mood as he gave the bowlers short shrift, tonking 13 boundaries in a pulsating knock of 67 not out, that saw the league leaders home in only 15.3 overs for the loss of just one wicket.
