Latton badminton international heads for World Senior Championships
WILTSHIRE’S Kyle Nethercott will be representing England in not one but two events at the BWF World Senior Badminton Championships in Turkey next month.
Doubles specialist Nethercott, from Latton, came home with a silver medal at the championships four years ago when he partnered Phil Wyatt.
In Ankara, however, Nethercott is teaming up with Lancashire’s John Bowker in the Men’s Doubles +50 event and Janet Walker from Worcestershire in the Mixed Doubles +50.
The championships begin on September 9 and run for six days and has age group titles in five-year bands from +35 years.
Nethercott, who used to live in Ampney St Peter, and Wyatt were the surprise packages in the World Championships in Spain back in 2009.
Their uninterrupted run through to the final included a defeat of the No.1 seeds, Kim Broderson and Per Ulrich from Denmark, and they were only seen off in the championship final by No.2 seeds, Teerachai J and Surachai M from Thailand, in a third and deciding set.
“Unfortunately, Phil, with whom I won the silver medal has had to stop competitive play following a major back operation so it has been difficult to compete on a National level,” said Nethercott.
“Having said that, I have reached the Men’s Nationals semi-finals twice and the Mixed Doubles once during the period since.
“Also, I have won the Hampshire Open twice and the West of England Men’s Doubles titles, while I have helped Gloucestershire to win three National teams titles over the last four years.”
