Ciren's youngsters see off Hellenic Div 2 East leaders
10:37am Tuesday 12th March 2013 in Sport
Chairman’s Reserve Challenge Cup QF.
Cirencester Town Dev 3 Burnham FC 2.
CIRENCESTER came through narrowly in a tough match against the leaders of Hellenic Div 2 East who had conceded only five goals and lost only one game so far this season.
Cirencester broke the deadlock in the 28th minute when Liam O'Brien continued his recent goal-scoring form by powering a low shot past the keeper.
The game was developing into an enthralling contest and five minutes later Burnham equalised. Ciren keeper Clatworthy played the ball into the chest of an attacker, who headed it on and his strike partner slotted it home.
Ciren felt there had been a handball in the build-up to the goal but it went unspotted.
Although a little stunned, the home side showed great character and in the 39th minute Ian McSheery passed the ball to Ollie Pitt who laid it off for Josh Morse to score.
The second half started as the first had finished with a lot of niggly fouls.
Thereafter, Cirencester began to build some momentum and were dominating the game, with both Jack Smith and Morse going close.
With just a few minutes left, however, Burnham were awarded a corner from which they equalised.
The game seemed to be heading for extra time when Ciren were themselves awarded a corner.
Morse floated the ball into the box and Kyle Pitts sent a bullet-like header past the keeper to give the Development side a famous win.
MoM: Liam O'Brien and Liam James.
