Purton 2 North Leigh Res 0.

TWO goals in the opening half of last Saturday's game at The Red House saw Purton pick up their first league win in eight league matches, writes Alan Eastwood.

This was a much-improved display by Purton despite the fact that manager Chris Pethick had just 13 players available due to injuries and work commitments.

North Leigh rarely troubled the Purton defence and on the rare occasions they did break through, Purton keeper Lee Wilson dealt with their efforts easily.

In the first ten minutes, Marcus Hall and Jamie McGahey both shot wide but two minutes later Ashley Gooch set up Scott Campbell to put Purton 1-0 ahead. Stephen Avenell sent the team in 2-0 up at the break after netting from close range three minutes before the changeover.

In the second half, Purton had chances to increase their lead – Avenell, Hall and McGahey all had chances and a Dave Gee volley in the 85th minute was brilliantly clawed away by the visiting keeper.

Three welcome points for Purton, then, following their 3-3 draw a week earlier with Letcombe that eases their relegation worries.
