Cirencester Reserves impressive – after they hit top gear
5:56pm Monday 22nd October 2012 in Sport
Uhlsport Hellenic Div 2 (Res) West.
Cirencester Town Dev 4 Wootton Bassett Town 2.
CIRENCESTER were at full strength for this match and completed their sixth straight league win – but not without some early pressure from Bassett.
It took Cirencester almost half an hour to get a foothold in the game but once on top – captain Liam O'Brien hitting a left foot shot into the net from 25 yards – there was no stopping them.
Within a couple of minutes, the tenacious O’Brien robbed his opposite number in midfield and passed to Jack Smith, whose cross was neatly headed home by Jack Ayres.
Cirencester had worked hard to get into the game and by the end of the half were playing all the football against a strong, aggressive Bassett side.
Ciren started the second half with Tom Jehu and Luke Allen coming on in place of Mikey Coram and Dan Roberts respectively.
Almost immediately the score was 3-0 when a Josh Morse corner was headed into the net by a Bassett defender.
Cirencester now began to dominate the match and almost made it 4-0 when a long throw from O’Brien was headed a fraction wide by Kyle Pitts.
But it was soon 4-0 when Smith floated over a superb cross for substitute Dan Hill to score.
Cirencester seemed to relax, thinking that the game was won, and in the 81st minute they paid the price when Bond was penalised for a foul just inside the box which Bassett converted. This led to Bassett’s second after a good run by their centre forward.
