A TEAM of nature-lovers from Ampney Crucis Primary School has finally had their knowledge rewarded as winners of the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust Nature Quiz of the Year.

The school has been in the semi-final of the quiz for the last three years, but this year’s team of five Year 6 girls went one better and took the top spot.

Around 200 schools took part in the nature quiz across the county, with Ampney Crucis, Great Rissington and Randwick making it to the final.

After five difficult rounds the Ampney Crucis girls were named as the winners, taking back to school a statue of an owl.

Headteacher Anne-Marie Wilkie said: “I am incredibly proud. It was a very tough and challenging final. They were modest with their win but really pleased. The whole school is cock-a-hoop.

"It is all down to our super teaching assistant Jane Hardy who runs a lunchtime nature club. We are a little school in the Cotswolds but we had a team that was really fired up and went all the way.”
