THE sporting legacy of London 2012 lives on in schools thanks to this year’s Gloucestershire School Games. Now in its second year, record numbers of pupils from the county’s schools took part in the 2013 School Games.

And for the first time the event, which is part of the national Sainsbury’s School Games, began with an opening ceremony at Gloucester’s iconic cathedral.

Over the next four days the stage was set for secondary schools, primary and special schools to battle it out for medals in 19 different sports across several different venues including the South Cerney Outdoor Education Centre.

Events for primary school pupils included sportshall athletics, Kwik cricket and rounders, whilst secondary school pupils tried their hand at a host of sports including basketball, badminton, rowing, sailing, windsurfing, mountain biking and archery.

Ashton Keynes and Leckhampton Primary tied equal in the top spot for the primary schools with one gold and a silver medal each.

The event was organised by Active Gloucestershire in partnership with the University of Gloucestershire and local school games organisers.

Games organiser Kirsty Dunleavy, children and young people manager for Active Gloucestershire said: “The Gloucestershire School Games have gone brilliantly this year and the weather, unlike last year, has been superb.

"The schools' pupils and head teachers have really embraced the School Games values and we have managed to build on the platform that was created last year.”
