AS A former chairman of New Brewery Arts, I was rather hurt and concerned to see Mr Clifton-Brown's implication that "the New Brewery Arts" needs "beefing up" by the proposed cinema development.

FIRST I must thank those who voted for me. It is disappointing that consistent service to the community seems to count for so little. My record includes being an officer of Malmesbury Civic Trust since 1997 taking particular interest in the River Walk & writing four local history books, having been a fund raiser of Carnival for many years and briefly serving on the committees of Friends of Athelstan Museum and Friends of Malmesbury Abbey.

READING the largely favourable correspondence on the proposals for regeneration of Cirencester Market Place one is struck by the total absence of the 'but' word, ie as in "I fully support the aims behind these proposals, they are just what the town needs, but...".

WE WISH to thank all those people in Malmesbury who voted for us in the recent election on May 2. Whilst we are part of a larger council and look forward to working with our colleagues, we will also focus on achieving our ten fundamental aims as soon as possible for our residents.

WHILST I appreciate what Wildmoor Properties have done for Cirencester, I think they should come clean and inform the town's residents why they cannot complete the refurbishment of the King's Head Hotel, but have enough financial capital to provide a new cinema etc.

PENALTY clauses can be used to insure against default or failure to meet the conditions of a contract so in the same vein would it not make sense for any urban development that can affect the ambience of the environment to be subject to a penalty, not only if a building is substandard, but also if nothing is done with some part of a declared development so as to make a negative impression on residents and visitors alike?
