YOUR article (August 9) about the overgrown verges and roundabouts of Cirencester and the comparison of its "messy approaches to the town" with the lovely landscaped roundabout which welcomes drivers to Tetbury, made me think about how much effort has been made by so many people over so many years to ensure that our beautiful Cotswold town is always a serious contender in the "Britain in Bloom" contest.
It's such a pity that a minority of residents let us down by completely neglecting their gardens. The main reason for this is laziness. Unless they have a good excuse - such as frailty, disablement or excessive work commitments - I think the custodians of these neglected gardens should be fined if they do not tidy them up. They might even discover the 'work ethic' and find satisfaction, not to mention the good exercise, in improving the appearance of their gardens which so many people who live in flats would love to own.
