Cirencester - what a disgrace!

AS SOMEONE who was born in and always lived in Cirencester all my life, I would like to know what has happened to my town? What a disgrace it has become. Grass verges don’t get cut, brambles grow through the railings over the foot bridges, litter everywhere, and as for the state of the roundabouts all around and on the approach to the town.

I thought we were supposed to be the capital of the Cotswolds. When you visit other towns, ie Tetbury, you are greeted with flowers and well tended roundabouts, which make it a pleasure to see. There is long grass at road junctions, which block motorists' view, hedges grown across pavements, so pedestrians have to step out into the road. When is it going to be tidied up so that we can be proud of our town?

Is what we are seeing the awful reality of a Lib Dem controlled council in action ?

As you'll be aware Susie luv, this is all the responsibility of Glos County Council which unfortunately for you takes it to the door of your two Conservative County Councillors for Cirencester - those invisible chump twins from the Beeches.

I also thought highways were the responsibility of the County Council who really should take a look at the overgrown roundabout next to the new Redrow and Charles Church developments on London Road.
It looks as if Cirencester is being overlooked by the administration at Shire Hall.
Time for some action by our County Councillors.

I suppose ultimately people will have decide whether they want flowers and displays on the approach to our market towns or other things, for example full staffing at old folks homes, you only have one lot of money and when it's gone it's gone.

Funny, isn't it, that other towns such as Chipping Campden, Bourton and Tetbury seem to manage their approaches, I suspect by the initiatives of their town councils. And if you want your town to attract tourists, which in turn support business, which , in turn help to provide employment, then you have to do more than just blame other authorities. Cirencester Town Council increased their precept by 5% this year - so let's see some results, rather than the puerile name calling which the Lib Dems seem to think is a substitute for actual policy and getting things done.

If i recall correctly thaere was an initiative a few years ago to tidy the roundabouts and I believe there were sponsers in place willing to part with money in retuen for a small advertising sign on the roundabouts. I seem to remember it being thrown out as being "too tacky" even though many other towns around the area seem to have nicely decorated approaches with adverts from local businesses. Whay not Ciren?

I can also remember when it was thought too tacky to have advertising boards on the roundabouts that would be kept clean and tidy by the advertisers.

Coming from the A417 using the little slip road to turn onto the Burford Road can be dangerous when the edge hasn't been cut for while. It is the same getting out of the football club entrance onto Kingshill Road (although this may be the clubs fault).

We all understand that there is little money and a lot of things that need it but, what impression do we give as a tourist area when virtually all of the roads in are a mess

Walking up the Old Tetbury Road is becoming tricky what with the overgrown weeds making the pavement a single-file track. The stinging nettles and thistles are particularly unpleasant to brush against.

There's such a thing as being too tidy. Verges and roundabouts form valuable habitat links for birds, small mammals and insects. They also grow wild flowers providing food for bees and so. Mowing everything flat makes roads into even bigger obstacles that they are already.
