Subservience still thrilling

SOME Tory MPs and Cabinet Ministers are revolting, or so we are told by the news media. This is because they oppose the government’s proposal to change the composition of the House of Lords by making it a mainly elected body and at the same time reducing the number of MPs by 50.

They are not alone. Many a Liberal and Labour legislator looks longingly at the Lords and no wonder. Where else can you turn up, sign in, warm a green leather seat in comfort and collect £300 plus expenses a day for doing just that?

Not to mention wearing funny clothes now and again and having the coveted cachet of being addressed as My Lord or My Lady. Whatever else changes the ancient culture of subservience must be maintained in England’s green and pleasant land.

God bless the Queen and her relations and keep us in our proper stations.
