LAST week Baylight Properties made public their proposals for the building of houses on the old quarry site off Bowling Green Lane, and at a public event at the Rugby Club invited comments.

I have no comment on the detail of the proposal, and no complaint against Baylight. But this is the wrong place for building of any kind. It has been a play area for children and a public recreational space for many decades. It is crowded with children and sledges after a snowfall. It should not be built on. It has been identified in the Cirencester Town Council Plan 'Our Future Cirencester' as a recreation area in a town that > is in their words "...poorly served with play spaces...".

It appears that no planning application has yet been made, but that they will need to demonstrate support from the community as a part of any future application. They may not realise the degree of regard in which the Humpty Dumps is held by locals.

Let's tell them, and tell the CDC too! Email Mark Freeman at mark@baylight.co.uk to let Baylight know what you think. You could copy your email to the CDC at cdc@cotswold.gov.uk. If you don't have access to email, you can write to Baylight direct: Baylight, Inverness Mews, London, W2 3JQ.

I am a newcomer to Cirencester, I came to live here about 30 years ago. I know children played there and called it the Humpty Dumps in the 1940s. Does anyone know how long this area has been so named and used?
