What can Cirencester do for the armed forces?

THE silent lines of respectful people from Wootton Bassett have become a familiar sight on our television screens recently.

Thank you to them for representing us in saluting those men and women who have given their lives in the service of their country.

I wonder, however, if we could do more to support our armed forces, who are the mainstay of our democracy, whether we agree with political decisions or not.

On a recent visit to Atlanta in Georgia I emerged from the arrivals corridor to be greeted with a tremendous round of applause and cheers.

Rather taken aback at my sudden celebrity status, I turned to look behind me and saw two US servicemen returning from leave. Later, in the airport I saw many strangers approaching serving soldiers and shaking their hands.

I was told that airports all over America have welcoming committees set up to raise awareness of support for the armed forces. In every supermarket and shopping mall there are large notices thanking the men and women of the armed forces.

I know that readers of this letter will say that 'this is the American way' but it cannot be denied that the support is there and seems sadly lacking in our country.

Wootton Bassett is doing its part for the fallen. What can we do collectively in Cirencester to support those serving?

ELAINE GOWERS Cirencester.
