LIKE your correspondent, Mr Adams, I have a scientific background and use logic, science and technology to do my job. I totally agree that the Bible is completely unscientific but that is not what it is all about.

The Bible was authored by God – who is a spirit – speaking through men. Some of it is history; some of it is prophecy – some fulfilled; some still to be fulfilled. All of it is true – even if we do not believe it.

The Greek philosopher Demosthenes, said: “People believe what they want to believe,” so I will not argue with Mr Adams. Instead I will relate one personal experience.

I became a Christian on January 13, 1980. For at least 15 years before that date I suffered badly from stomach ulcers and was frequently hospitalised as a result.

That condition prevailed until October 1988 when I experienced yet another bleed but, as a self-employed engineer, I could not afford to take time off work. Instead, I had to ‘stand on the truth of God’s word’ believing what He said in the book of Exodus: “I am the Lord that healeth thee”.

For three days, I mixed my working day: 30 minutes at the drawing board with 5-minutes out to meditate on those seven words. At the end of those days I was healed and I have never suffered a stomach bleed since.

By the way; 800 years before the birth of Christ, the prophet Isaiah revealed that the earth was round: “It is He (God) that sitteth on the circle of the earth” (Is: 40:22) – even if we do not believe it!
