WHY IS it that every time somebody is killed or injured on our roads, the cry goes up “Reduce the speed limit”?

Presumably, everybody sticks religiously to the speed limit and obviously those making this plea never exceed the speed limit.

Ninety-five per cent of crashes are caused by human error.

In Gloucestershire the prime cause is ‘failure to look properly’.

There is no such thing as a dangerous road.

Most of us drive these roads without any problem day in, day out.

When there is a collision, one or other of the drivers/riders has made a mistake and others suffer the consequences.

The headline ‘Lower limit could stop the crashes’ is totally irresponsible; based on what facts?

Has this newspaper ever headlined the result of a police collision enquiry?

No, that is a bit boring and inevitably not sensational.

However, this would perhaps educate people as to why these collisions occur.

Councillor Paul Hodgkinson has not missed the opportunity to get his picture in the paper again, just what has his task group found out so far about this dangerous road?

He will have access to the facts such as, collision Fosse Bridge – three dead – speed limit 40mph – speed of collision well in excess – cause racing.

The reduced speed limit did not stop this crash.

I, for one, am eagerly awaiting his findings/solution.

So perhaps this newspaper could start the process of educating us drivers and road users rather than sensationalise the misfortune of some poor souls and the gut reaction of those involved.
