THANKS to Luke Wolton for trying to register the Old Memorial Hospital as a listed building.

My grandfather talked with pride about the spiral staircase, given to the town after the First World War.

He told me the hospital itself was a gift to the town.

Does anyone know what’s in it? Surely we’re entitled to know who gave it to us? Surely we’re entitled to know what’s in it? Does the Freedom of Information Act apply to buildings?

The Anderson shelter also deserves registration.

In 1939, during the Second World War, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain made John Anderson responsible for making sure Britons were ready for the German air raids.

Families had to build their own shelters.

Most had to buy the necessary instructions and materials.

Families whose income was less than £200 per annum had the kits free, while other families had to pay £7.

How does the proposed demolition of the above buildings affect the hospital cottages?

The Old Station is another site of historic interest, built in 1841 and designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the man placed second only to Winston Churchill in a BBC poll asking viewers to vote for the 100 greatest Britons.

It was one of two railway stations in the town, and enabled travel by train to and from Kemble.

On what basis have CDC reached what some of us think is a disgraceful decision?
