WHILE I agree that using the disused rail line to Kemble for a light rail link is an excellent idea (Standard, May 26), I am concerned that the proposal will mean the potential use of the line for a cycle and walking way will be overlooked.

The light rail proponents admit the scheme has a long-term timescale of three to five years for delivery.

They also admit that there is a problem of a missing bridge, so that the cost of the line and rolling stock is likely to be in the millions.

Compared to the relatively simple and affordable construction of a cycle way, the rail link looks like a distant dream.

It will also have the effect of distracting Bathurst Development Limited (BDL) from the more achievable, and necessary, additional access route to the proposed South Chesterton housing area.

With regards to funding a cycle way, there are a number of current government initiatives which will provide financial support for partnership schemes such as those set out in the Department for Transport ‘Draft Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy’ of March.

I would urge Cotswold District Council and BDL to cooperate in considering seriously a short-term solution to reducing car traffic and enabling commuters and tourists to access Cirencester by cycle or on foot along the disused railway line to and from Kemble Station.
