PARKING is a vexed subject which weekly is mentioned in your columns.

Cost and adequacy are features, which receive regular attention.

Now we are advised that the council propose an in-depth review, with the intent to provide a long term solution.

Future expansion in Chesterton, where too many houses are planned to be built, is a coming strain on the town.

Decking in the Waterloo has been suggested, and were it to be offered it would blight the outlook of some 50 homes.

Some of which are in the Waterloo, some in the Peaks which currently overlook the existing car park, and of course some in Corinium Gate.

Decked car parks are never pretty, but if the town must have one, this obvious answer is that it should be built where the Old Memorial Hospital stands.

Over the years, that building has been allowed to deteriorate, and is an eyesore.

It takes up a great deal of underused space, which could effectively provide a strategic boost to the car parks, and be reachable from the west of town.

The Memorial Hospital is said to contain a protected staircase, but since this is currently not in public view, could it not be reinstalled in a decked car park in that location?
