I WAS appalled to read the Pub Spy critique of The Thames Head Inn in your newspaper of May 21. My wife and I have been regular customers at the inn for more than 10 years and we regard it as one of the finest gastropubs in the area. We simply do not recognise it from comments made.

We support Mrs Lord, the licensee, whole heartedly (Letters, May 28).

Your (evidently) young reporter should be sent on a catering industry training course and also try to get somejournalistic tips from expert restaurant critics such as William Sitwell, Charles Campion or others before commenting further such nonsense in print.

Our successful local businesses need support not unfounded criticism. I am disappointed that the Standard should feel the need to resort to such below-the-belt tactics.

I hope that you, as the new editor, will do better in the future otherwise I regret we shall no longer be readers after an unbroken spell of 26 years in the area.
