REGARDING your article on tunnels under Cirencester.
In the west market place, next door to Edinburgh Wool, used to be Leonard Jones, a jewellery and China shop.
I worked there from 1966-1971 and the cellars ended with a bricked-up arch, and from memory possibly back-to-back with the one pictured.
The shops are now occupied by Fat Face and Oxfam respectively.
The cellars were gained by narrow stone steps from the back of the china shop, which is now Oxfam.
Workmen also uncovered a case of Roman teaspoons whilest working in the cellars, the spoons went to Gloucester museum.
Doesn’t the River Churn run into a tunnel around by the open-air swimming pool?
This may account for Erin sensing water.
