I ALREADY knew the results of the election -–well, at least for Fairford’s Town Council (FTC).
We didn’t have an election, as no posts were contested – indeed, two are still vacant.
They will be I think described as ‘casual vacancies’ by the system and somehow duly filled.
The FTC will be then be a mix of adopted, re-adopted and co-opted.
It is remarkable reflection of the interest shown in local government.
It either shows a complete lack of faith in those who do put themselves forward or a complete disinterest in the process.
Established councillors tend to say that the people are generally disinterested in standing.
That’s why they stay on, ‘cos somebody has to do it.
Others describe the council as a sort of ‘closed shop’ with an exclusive membership.
Both views have some validity, I suspect, as scant effort is made to promote the importance of its role in the 21st century.
It’s a sort of Russell Brand effect – why bother?
