I WOULD like to echo Gordon Varley’s letter from last week.

After months spent ‘improving’ the A417 London Road there is still no zebra or pelican crossing all the way from the top of the road near the town roundabout down to the playing fields of Kingshill School.

Drivers approaching and leaving the town go fast on this road.

Trying to cross it is a nightmare for a partially sighted person with a guide dog such as me as well as for children and elderly people.

Many children are forced to cycle on the pavement, which is an additonal hazard for frail older people.

The crossing on the Burford Road is too far away and there are no lights or zebra markings there anyway, so it still causes problems for drivers and pedestrians.

Then there is the Stratton road into town – a dual carriageway on both sides.

The bridge into town can be lethal in the winter as it is no longer treated, so what choice is there for the non-motorist?

Beeches Road was successfully resurfaced in a couple of days, so how is it the work on the London and Burford Roads took so long with so little improvement – and what was the cost?
