I CANNOT understand the report regarding the fatal crash at Birdlip on A417 (Standard, October 2).

The speed limit at the junction involved is 60mph.

The 40mph limit is only through Nettleton Bottom and ends as one gets to the top of the hill, onto the level road to Birdlip junction, where the 60mph is reinstated. The HGV involved could therefore legally drive at 60mph and would have to be driving at 75 mph to be 15mph over the limit, which I doubt.

I travelled this road regularly, and again this weekend and specifically checked the speed signs, both from the Air Balloon and from Nettleton Bottom. They are as I noted above.

Although the HGV driver was exonerated he still undeservedly has had his driving questioned.

Editor’s note: I can understand your confusion Mr Pether but the speed limit was attached to the particular vehicle, not to the road. HGVs over 7.5 tonnes have an upper limit of 40mph on single carriageway roads, although the government is looking to increase this limit to 50mph.
