I WOULD like to express my appreciation for the treatment which my father received recently at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon. My thanks to the senior matron, who led by example in persuading an aggressively agitated man to undergo essential tests without sedation or restraint. The same to all the staff of Woodpecker Ward, who care for their challenging patients with cheerful compassion and respect in a bright and clean environment – and still find time to support the families.
My father improved but shortly after discharge, his condition worsened again. The paramedics and the team at Malmesbury Primary Care Centre together enabled him, over four days, to have a dignified death in his home at the age of 92.
We should recognise these high standards in order to balance the necessary reporting of shortcomings, so that those doing a good job, or better, have their morale maintained.
