BACK in the early 1960s, I believe, it was Gloucestershire County Council who came up with the offer that if we, the youth of Tetbury, were prepared to bring the building up to a good standard that they, GCC, would purchase the then Institute Hall for us, the youth of the town.

Well, under the guidance of the late Mr D Humphreys we did just that and the youth club began until its demise some time ago.

Now they have been offered the Dolphins Hall to ‘let steam off’, so what’s the next step? They make far too much noise for the local residents, which includes Coombe House, a series of flats built specially for the retired of Tetbury, so they will be stopped using it. What a bright idea, or was it something else?

The ideal place would be in the Old Station Yard, away from everyone. They can make as much noise as they want to.

Also, I understand that the Dolphin Hall committee wants to put a series of grass tennis courts on land adjacent to St Mary’s churchyard. Surely a better option would be to approach Sir William Romney’s School, and with the money already raised put them on the school grounds where the school pupils would enjoy them in school hours [a future Wimbledon winner] and the tennis club members at all other times, but then what about the piece of land by St Mary’s? Well, how about approaching the Lottery and get some help in putting a swimming-pool there, then all the townspeople would be able to enjoy the facility. I am sure the townsfolk of Tetbury would help raise the money for such a help to the town.

What about it, councillors, or do you forget what it was like to be young and when your elders thought of you, not just themselves?

COLIN MOORE,

Tetbury
