I READ the piece in the Standard (July 3) about the deputy mayor of Tetbury, Dr Tony Walsh, proposing that Tetbury Town Council should do something regarding helping the people of Tetbury to get on the “social housing” ladder.

I would like to point out that Cllr Kevin Painter, has, with the help of Mrs Sue Raines, another Tetbury lady, been fighting tooth and nail for the community with Cllr Stephen Hirst occasionally sitting in on discussions.

It would be terrific if our town councillors did help those needing social housing as there is an awful lot of the community of Tetbury who rely on it.

Prior to the 1974 local government change, Tetbury was the largest supplier of the good old, sensible, council housing so instead of unaffordable private development how about getting back to it?

On another matter, I recently wrote to four Tetbury land owners regarding the time that is left for burials in the locality and would they be willing to talk to the council about selling some space so there will be somewhere local to visit the final resting place of a loved one.

If this does not happen the only place available will be the Memorial Recreation Ground, aptly named, but then where will the rugby, cricket and all other sports clubs who play there go, nor forgetting the children’s play area. It is so uplifting that a councillor of Cllr Walsh’s stature in the community, who has always been concerned about the people either directly or indirectly, has now taken it upon himself to fight for their future.

I do hope others will join him.

Hopefully we will see a change in Tetbury that is long overdue .
