AS A regular Soroptimist volunteer to the Signpost hot meal served in Cirencester’s Methodist Church I was greatly saddened by the report from our council in the Standard.

Signpost serves a hot meal every Monday night to between 30 and 60 people, some of them children. There is no charge – and yes, some of those attending may not be in great hunger for food, but there are other needs which are met by this organisation.

Some come for the friendship and conversation, rather than remaining isolated at home. Some come for physical warmth thus saving on heating bills. Many do come especially for the meal – particularly those who have no means of cooking at home.

Graham and Juliette Harris provide an excellent service and should be supported by all. The modest amount of money requested from the council is minute in context to council spending. In all walks of life there are a few who take advantage of something free, but this should not deter us from supporting those genuinely in need – and perhaps councillors should consider the proverb about throwing stones in glass houses.
