WITH reference to your front page story, Gloucestershire County Council seems to think that on-street parking will ease congestion. In fact, it will increase congestion.

I have pointed out in my consultation response that my business has no rear access, so any delivery vehicles will have to stop in the road for a few minutes while they make their delivery, stopping traffic flow as they do this. Many other businesses are in the same situation.

I stopped a delivery van driver this afternoon and asked him what he would do. He replied that he would “stop anywhere, me” in order to make a delivery.

The council also claims that on-street parking would force people to use car parks. This would be true if there were spaces free in the car parks, but often they are full by the afternoon on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays.

My wife had to drive round several car parks today (Friday, March 7) before she found a free car park space. This need to visit several car parks looking for a space adds to congestion. With on-street parking, we will have drivers touring the town roads looking for spaces.

We need more car parks, not street parking.
