IN VIEW of the fact that a few inches of snow closes hundreds, possibly thousands of schools across Great Britain, would the following be worth considering?
Fix Christmas Day on the fourth Thursday in December. Schools close on the previous Tuesday, and stay closed until the fourth Monday in January. This would mean opening throughout August and some changes through the school year, but at least the children' s education would not be so interrupted, since any snow we get usually falls in January.
No doubt there will be all kinds of objections, but it could be worked out if enough people consider there to be benefit in the proposal.
