PUPILS from North Cerney and Powell’s primary schools will do battle across a chess board on Wednesday, July 4 after months of competing against five local schools.
The final of the inauguaral Bingham Library Trust chess shield will be held at the Bingham Gallery in Cirencester when one school will be named as the 2012 chess champions.
Five primary schools, Bibury, Down Ampney, North Cerney, Powell’s and Siddington have been competing since January for a chance to win the Bingham Library Trust Chess Shield, organised by Robin Craven.
Teresa Day, headteacher of Powell’s School in Cirencester said: “I know the children have really enjoyed themselves and it has included children who don't always fit into the sport, music or art after school activities, which has been a real plus.”
Kath Hume, headteacher of Down Ampney school added: “My children thoroughly enjoyed the experience. All of them began playing this year - so I was very proud of the achievements. I know they'll be keen to take part next year too. Hopefully other schools will feel they to can participate next year.”
Organiser Robin Craven is keen for other schools to come forward to take part in the event next year.
