Duke of Edinburgh awards for Westonbirt girls

SIX girls from Westonbirt School are celebrating after completing their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The final task for the girls included a 60 km expedition in the Brecon Beacons, which included three nights under canvas.

One of the girls, 18 year-old Katie Binns from Minchinhampton said: "Together we improved our teamwork, leadership and map reading skills. We also developed our determination."

The other girls in the team were Phoebe Odam-Smith (18) of Cirencester, Alice Andrews (17) of Barry, Ingrid Davidon (18) from Nairobi, Ami Tsumura (17) from Okinawa and Chawinda Sriprasaert (18) of Bangkok.

The girls were all very keen to recommend the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme to their friends. "I’d definitely tell them to do it," said Phoebe. "It’s a lot of work, especially if you haven’t done Silver or Bronze before, but it is also lots of fun and brings you much closer to your friends."
