SWELL Primary school children had the chance to visit a local dairy farmer and cheese-maker as part of last month’s Soil Association’s Organic September.
Pupils from Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 left the classroom behind to try their hands at cheese-making at Simon Weaver Organic in Upper Slaughter.
Master cheese-makers were on hand to guide pupils though the process and the cheeses will be delivered to the school for tasting once they have ripened.
The groups of children also adopted one of calves and will get to meet them regularly.
Simon Weaver said: “We believe strongly in working with the community and especially in the important role which education plays in furthering our abilities to make informed and reasonable food choices. By allowing the children entry into the usually ‘grown up’ world of food production, we offer them the chance to also think about the food choices they themselves make.”
