TWO talented teenage musicians from Cirencester Deer Park school have won a Doctor Who soundtrack competition and will see their composition performed by a full orchestra at the Dr Who Proms at the world-famous Royal Albert Hall this weekend.

Gabe Stone, 15 and Matt Owen, 15, created a musical soundtrack to a recent clip from the hit TV show and were delighted to be declared winners of the senior section of the competition.

The piece will be performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and played live on Radio 3 as part of the Proms celebrating 50 years of Dr Who.

Following their win, they have had the chance to orchestrate their piece with Dr Who composer and arranger Ben Foster and Samuel Thompson, the orchestration coordinator for the tv series at the Maida Vale Studios.

And they put the finishing touches to the orchestration at school with music teachers Dan Cook and Liz Norman.

Gabe Stone said: “The clip was quite hard to write music for as there is lots of dialogue which splits up the momentum of the music, it took a lot of thought but eventually, after analysing what the moods and emotions of the clip were, we worked out a theme.”

Gabe and Owen have worked together prior to this, having formed a band in 2010. Music teacher Dan Cook said: ”It was a daunting but very exciting task to work with the boys to arrange their ideas for all of the different instruments that make up a symphony orchestra. As a music teacher it is not every day that you get to work on a piece that will be performed in the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Proms.”

The boys and their families along with their music teachers are now preparing to travel to London for the big event this weekend.

Matt Owen summed up his experience: “I’m grateful for being given this opportunity and feel privileged to have our piece played at such an iconic venue by the BBC Orchestra of Wales,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed the experience of working with such talented people such as Ben and Sam, and it’s definitely given me valuable pointers for my own future in music.”
