Ancient Malmesbury organisation opens its archives

AN ORGANISATION that was given its charter by the first king of England is hosting an exhibition of treasures from its archives.

The Warden and Freemen of Malmesbury, who were given land around the town by Athelstan after joining his fight against the Danes, featured recently on ITV 3 with John Sergeant.

“We are a unique organisation within the country and keep up all of our old traditions,” said one of the organisers, Liz Snell.

“We have held exhibitions before but this time there will be many new items on show from our archives as well as an 1840s map purchased from our local museum which we had restored – this will be kept by us for future generations of Malmesbury people.”

The exhibition on September 8 is in the town hall between 10.30am and 3pm. Admission is free.
