Last RAF Britannia joins armed forces day celebrations

THE aircraft which brought the famous treasures of Tutankhamun to the UK 40 years ago and supported Concorde in its flight tests, is taking part in the national Armed Forces Day on Saturday.

XM496, the last surviving complete RAF Bristol Britannia transport, made the last flight of a Britannia anywhere in the world in 1997 when she landed at former RAF Kemble where she is in the care of her preservation society.

She will be open for tours of the flight deck between noon and 5pm alongside an exhibition featuring a RAF Vampire jet cockpit and military vehicles.

Visitors should enter the airfield via the north gate from the A433 and follow signs to LRTT. The website xm496.com has more information.
