Man escapes Malmesbury flat blaze

A MAN escaped unhurt after a flat in Malmesbury was gutted by fire tonight.

Fire crews from the town as well as Tetbury and Chippenham were called to the blaze in Bremilham Rise just before 7pm, along with paramedics and police, when neighbours heard an explosion and raised the alarm.

The householder, who is thought to have been asleep at the time, got out as the fire took hold. Initially there were fears that someone else was still inside.

Station manager Antony Bholah from Wiltshire Fire Service said when crews arrived there was a well developed fire on the first floor. Firefighters used breathing apparatus to search the flat and deal with the blaze.

He added that the cause was being investigated.

The householders were being temporarily rehoused by a Red Cross support unit.
